More Than a Canvas Print: Why Varnish Matters
Share
When people shop for canvas wall art, they often compare the image, size and price. One important detail is easy to overlook: what happens after the canvas is printed.
At Sunshine Canvas, varnish is part of what transforms a printed image into a finished piece of art.
Most canvas prints stop after printing
Many canvas-printing companies print the image, stretch it and ship it. The canvas may look good, but the printed surface is left without a substantial finishing layer.
Our process continues after printing.
Varnish is applied to the printed canvas before it is stretched and prepared for display. This additional step takes time and care, but it creates a deeper, more finished appearance while adding another layer of protection.
Varnish brings colour to life
A quality varnish can enhance the appearance of a canvas in several ways. It can deepen the colours, increase visual richness and make certain tones appear more vibrant.
Dark colours can feel more intense. Highlights can become more luminous. Details and contrast can have greater presence, helping the artwork feel less like a reproduction and more like a finished art piece.
The result is especially noticeable when the canvas is viewed in different lighting throughout the day.
Protection beyond appearance
Varnish is not only decorative.
Our varnish provides a protective surface that helps shield the printed canvas from everyday exposure, dust and handling. It also includes UV protection, helping reduce the effects of ultraviolet light over time.
No artwork should be placed in direct, intense sunlight indefinitely, but a properly varnished canvas has an added layer of protection compared with an uncoated print.
When the finish becomes part of the artwork
For selected pieces, we take the finish a step further by mixing glitter into the varnish.
This is not simply glitter printed into the image. The glitter is part of the hand-applied surface finish. Depending on the artwork, we may use gold, silver or multicolour glitter to complement the colours and mood of the piece.
From one angle, the canvas may appear subtly luminous. As the lighting or viewing angle changes, small points of sparkle can appear, shift and disappear again. The surface seems to sparkle and dance, adding a new dimension to the artwork.
That changing quality is difficult to appreciate in a flat product photograph. It is something you experience when the canvas is on the wall and the light moves across it.
A truly bespoke finishing touch
Two people can look at the same artwork and choose completely different finishes.
One person may prefer the understated appearance of standard varnish. Another may want warm gold shimmer, cool silver highlights or the changing colour of a multicolour finish.
The finish becomes part of the creative decision—not merely a protective coating added at the end. It can be selected to complement the image, the room and the feeling you want the artwork to create.
That is what makes the finished piece feel bespoke.
