Mona Lena by Manasseh Johnson Sr. combines a detailed face with sharply divided geometric shapes. Large gold-toned hoop earrings frame the portrait, while blue, turquoise, purple and red sections create a vivid backdrop around the dark angular hair and shoulders.
Fine facial details contrast with broad flat color, giving the portrait a distinctive balance of realism and abstraction. Diagonal boundaries lead through the face and into the surrounding composition without losing its direct expression.
